IRC
There are a wide variety of Internet
Relay Chat programmes available now on the Internet. One of the better ones is mIRC
which can be found at http://www.mirc.co.uk.
Otherwise go to any of the Software Download sites and look
under IRC or click on the icon to go to Infoseek Chat.
FTP
File Transfer Protocol programmes allow you to download files from remote file servers. Your browser will allow you to do this too, but dedicated FTP software is able to be customised to your needs, is easier to use and usually does a better and faster job. Cute FTP is excellent as is WS-FTP. Go to any of the Software Download sites and look under FTP.
Search Engines

E-Mail Software
Your browser will do a pretty good job of sending and receiving E-mail, but dedicated E-mail software is able to be highly customised to your needs, is easier to use and usually does a better and more organised job. Eudora is excellent - so is Pegasus. Otherwise go to any of the Software Download sites and look under E-mail.
Browser Software
Obviously if you are reading this you already have a browser. However new versions come out every few months, so it pays to upgrade your copy regularly. The Software Download sites will list a variety of browsers, but most users choose either Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Newsgroup Software
Your browser will do a pretty good job of accessing newsgroups, but dedicated newsgroup software is able to be highly customised to your needs, is easier to use and usually does a better and more organised job. Free Agent is one of the best. Otherwise go to any of the Software Download sites and look under Usenet or Newsgroups.
Downloadable Software
There are many sites which offer a huge range of software for free download. Fortunately, the excellent TUCOWS site (The Ultimate Collection Of Windows Software) is now mirrored in South Africa to allow you much faster downloads of their comprehensive files. If you can't find what you're looking for there, try www.jumbo.com, www.shareware.com or www.download.com.
